The children and asthma
Same as in adults, in asthmatic children, a close and permanent contact to their doctor is necessary. Small children must be helped by their families, especially by their parents, to deal with this disease. The older ones should be taught how to handle their condition and what to do in case of asthma attack.
Children are given the same treatment as adult people, only in smaller doses. It is necessary also for them to have a “rescue” inhaler and also long-term control medicines. A peak-flow meter is especially because many of them have difficulties to communicate their symptoms.
The parent should take their child to a health care professional in case of suspicion of asthma, or the treatment is not effective. They should also be careful regarding asthma symptoms in their child.
The test results and the child's particular symptoms will give the doctor the possibility to establish what the appropriate treatment is. The parent must always make sure that the child takes the medicines in an appropriate way and that be sees regularly his therapist.
